Maple Sriracha Devils on Horseback

A hot appetizers made with pitted dates wrapped in bacon.

I first heard of Devils on Horseback a few years ago when I went to a bar named Clyde's to celebrate a few birthdays. After only one bite, I was in love!
Its been about a year since the last time I went to said bar, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about them. They're that good!

Clyde's Devils on Horseback have a habanero glaze over top but I'm not too much of a spice lover (and I have no idea how to even make a habanero glaze) so I searched online for a similar recipe and found this one by Stripedspatula.com. In her recipe she stuffed her dates with blue cheese. I chose to omit that because who likes blue cheese?! 😝

So if you like blue cheese or a bit more of a spicy kick, feel free to add more. All you need to do is pit the dates, and for those that don't know what that means, you just cut an opening in the dates and take the pit or seed out. Here's where you can add any stuffing of your choice or just skip that and proceed to wrap it with bacon.
It's very important that you soak your toothpicks in water for at least 30 minutes beforehand. Then you just glaze and bake for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes are up you can take them out and add more glaze and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Its something super easy that anyone can do.

Because I only made a small batch I halved the original recipe but I do plan on making this for Thanksgiving and I think I'll have to double, if not triple the recipe!

But for my test run recipe I used the following.

  • 8 pitted dates
  • 4 bacon strips cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon sriracha

The great thing about cooking is you can always add your own twist. I've seen recipes that have almonds inside the dates or ones with no glaze at all. It's really up to you how you make them.

Are you guys planning on making anything for Thanksgiving or do you celebrate it at all?
I hope you all enjoyed this post. Are you guys planning on trying this recipe out? I would love it if you share it with me! I plan on sharing more food related post in the future so be on the lookout for those.
Until next time and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
